We are honoured to host Professor Richard Ekins KC (Hon) from Oxford University as a Des Voeux Chambers-Oxford-HKU Visiting Fellow on 27 August 2024 for a public lecture at the DVC Conference Centre. Moderated by Jenkin Suen SC, Professor Richard Ekins KC (Hon) provided an illuminating lecture on recent developments of the law of judicial review in the United Kingdom.
Under the theme “Continuity and Change in the Law of Judicial Review“, Professor Ekins focused on sharing recent developments in the United Kingdom’s judicial review framework. He provided an insightful analysis of the evolving legal landscape, highlighting key judgments by the UK Supreme Court, particularly those surrounding the Brexit saga. His discourse also delved into the political responses these judicial decisions elicited, including the establishment of an Independent Review of Administrative Law and subsequent legislative actions.
Following the lecture, there was an enthusiastic Q&A session that drew insightful questions from the audience. The event was well attended by a full house, including representatives of HKU Law Faculty and Department of Justice, aspiring lawyers and law students from local and overseas universities.
About Des Voeux Chambers Oxford-HKU Visiting Fellowship
In September 2015, Des Voeux Chambers sponsored and facilitated the setting up of a fellowship scheme between the University of Oxford and HKU. The scheme enables an academic member of the Oxford Faculty of Law to spend a month in Hong Kong as a visiting fellow in the HKU Faculty of Law, so as to enhance academic exchanges between the two institutions. The inaugural visiting fellow is Professor Stefan Enchelmaier, who is Professor of European and Comparative Law.
