Background to DVC-SCIA Scholarship
On 4 September 2023, Des Voeux Chambers (“DVC”) welcomed Zhang Xue Sharon and Wang Yanchao Charlotte, who won the inaugural DVC-SCIA Scholarship. They were outstanding contestants in the FDI Moot 2022 Shenzhen Cup, organised by the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration (“SCIA”). Ms Zhang and Ms Wang who both won a Freshman Scholarship at Peking University, had won many prizes and awards including in National English Debate Competition, and in moots as best Advocate and Oralist.
With the generosity of DVC Senior Counsel Chua Guan-Hock SC, JP, the inaugural “DVC-SCIA Scholarship” was established in conjunction with the SCIA, in recognition of Ms Zhang and Ms Wang’s outstanding advocacy and performance in the FDI Moot. They were invited to undertake a two-week mini-pupillage programme at DVC on a scholarship, including all travel and accommodation fully funded.
Mr Chua SC very much hoped the Scholarship would help to nurture outstanding advocates in the Mainland, and more outstanding law students from the Mainland to experience the latest developments in international arbitration. The mini-pupillage programme at DVC would be an excellent opportunity for such Scholars to observe the day-to-day work of Hong Kong barristers and Judges, and cultivate the next generation of talent in international dispute resolution. This would also foster closer exchange between Hong Kong barristers and Mainland lawyers.
DVC’s John Hui, Michael Lok, and Charlie Liu are the pupil masters of the two Scholars.

Chua Guan-Hock SC, JP and Prof. Dr. Peter Malanczuk, SCIA Council Member, Director of the South China International Arbitration Center (Hong Kong) (SCIA-HK), and a Professor of Law at Hong Kong University, jointly presented the Scholarship certificates to Ms Zhang and Ms Wang.

For several years, DVC has sponsored and supported the FDI Moot Shenzhen and sent many members with extensive experience in dispute resolution and arbitration to serve as panel Arbitrators at the FDI Moot Shenzhen, and in many Mainland arbitrations.
