The Society of Construction Law Hong Kong’s flagship Annual Conference: Webinar Series

18 Nov 2020

The Society of Construction Law Hong Kong’s flagship Annual Conference under the Chairmanship of Calvin Cheuk has been moved online this year, and it consists of a series of four webinars. The theme this year is “Planning for the Unexpected”. Unexpected events regularly occur during the life of a construction project. Some of these events will have more severe consequences than others. The Annual Conference Series explores how these various unexpected events may impact a construction project and how to plan and mitigate such risks, particularly in a post Covid-19 world.

The Annual Conference Series launched yesterday (17 November 2020) with a session on force majeure and Covid-19 featuring Sean Wilken QC, James Howells QC, Jennie Wild, Kaiser Leung and Ellen Pang.

The session involved an insightful review and discussion of contractual provisions and principles governing events of force majeure, including the following important issues:

  • What is force majeure and how are such events defined under contract;
  • Potential consequences of force majeure events;
  • How has Covid-19 affected the construction industry and what are the problems caused; and
  • How have contracting parties dealt with these problems caused by Covid-19?

The next three sessions of the Annual Conference Series will be held on 19, 24 and 26 November 2020 (https://www.scl.hk/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=74)
