28 Apr 2022

DVC is delighted to announce that Winnie Tam, SBS, SC, JP received the 2021 Outstanding Women Professionals and Entrepreneurs Award from the Hong Kong Women Professionals & Entrepreneurs Association in recognition of her professional accomplishments.

Six months after the initial election, a panel of judges made up of leaders from political, business and academic circles in Hong Kong converged to conduct interviews, and finally shortlisted six winners. Winnie Tam SBS, SC, JP, Head of Des Voeux Chambers, was elected as one of the two awardees for the OWPEA honour.

Winnie started her practice as a barrister in Hong Kong in 1985 and was appointed as Senior Counsel in 2006. She served as the Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association from 2015 to 2017, and was one of the few female chairpersons of the Association. She has consistently promoted Hong Kong as a dispute resolution centre in Asia especially over the last few years. She is also a senior independent international arbitrator and mediator.

In an interview with the Hong Kong Economic Times (HKET), Winnie highlighted that in the field of arbitration, most arbitration institutions globally have lent their support to the principle of Diversity & Inclusion(D&I), so this is an opportune time at which to promote and recognise female practitioners. She encouraged more women from different backgrounds to join the arbitration profession with a view to  advancing their career trajectories.  Winnie was particularly grateful for the selfless support and encouragement from many seniors during her early years of practice in the field, which enabled her to adapt to the arbitration industry’s culture, in a short period of time, and establish best practices.

Being one of the awardees of OWPEA, Winnie expressed her gratitude to the judges for crediting her professional contributions and public service work, and amplified a more wide-ranging affirmation of women who have devoted themselves to society. She sincerely hopes that in the future women are increasingly passionate about their careers, and tirelessly strive to empower themselves without limitation.
